Mrs. Powell's Place
Welcome back to school!
I am so happy to welcome you all to the 20221-2022 school year! My name is Laura Powell and I will be teaching all Middle School Religion classes. This is my 8th year as a teacher at Sacred Heart School and my 38th year as an educator. I truly love what I do!
I am originally from Long Beach, MS which is a small town located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I attended St. Paul's Catholic School and St. Thomas Catholic School for elementary school. I attended Long Beach Junior High and Long Beach High School and graduated in 1979. After graduation, I earned an Associate's Degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1984 and my Master's in Education from William Carey College in 1999.
My teaching career began in 1984 at St. Thomas Elementary in Long Beach, MS. In 1987, I began teaching in the Long Beach Public School System at Harper McCaughan Elementary. After Hurricane Katrina, we relocated to Southaven and I joined the faculty at Oak Grove Central Elementary in Hernando. I taught there until I retired from public school teaching in 2012.
My teaching experience includes second, third, fifth, and sixth grade. I am certified to teach all subjects in grades K-6. I still love teaching as much as I did on that very first day many, many years ago. I am hopeful that God will continue to bless me so that I can continue to do what I love for many more years.
When I am not at Sacred Heart, I enjoy spending time with my very large family! My husband and I are the parents of 4 grown children who are all married. They live in Franklin, TN, in Seminole, FL, and in Gulfport, MS. We have a total of 10 grandchildren, and soon to be 2 great-children. They keep us busy and entertained!! I also enjoy cooking, baking, sewing, and machine embroidery.
Once again, I am excited to be spending this year with you all. It will be a different year in that we are living and working in the middle of a pandemic. However, with faith and perseverance, and lots of safety protocols, we will make it a great year!
